Grace English Lutheran Church was formed in 1909. It was dedicated by people who wanted an English speaking Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. This group of Lutherans originally met under the direction of H.M. Thompson, a seminary student.
On January 4th, 1910, Dr. C.M. Weswig, a professor at the United Church Seminary in St. Paul, organized the congregation with 127 charter members.
In 1912 the building site on Grand Avenue was purchased and the cornerstone was laid on September 19th, 1915. By 1916 the church building was completed and memorial windows were installed. The dedication service was held on Sunday, April 9th, 1916 with Rev. Adolph B. Roseland officiating.
The first church remodeling occurred in 1925 and the parsonage was built on 3rd Avenue in 1927 with money raised by the Ladies Aid.
In 1938 eleven Memorial bells were installed and first rang out on Easter morning.
By 1942, the Linton property on Grand Avenue was purchased and converted into a parish house.
The first radio broadcast of the morning worship service occurred in November of 1947 and the first education building was dedicated in 1951.
Membership included 4232 confirmed members and 5933 baptized members in 1960. The Schlicker organ was also dedicated that same year. With continued rapid growth, the education building received an addition, and was dedicated in 1962. Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Syverson made a substantial gift to the church and Grace Lutheran Foundation was formed to administer those funds. In 1966, M.B. Syverson Lutheran home was dedicated.
Today, the church building itself has undergone numerous remodeling. The parish house is no longer, but the children's chapel lives on within the education building. While much has changed, Grace Lutheran church continues to serve the people; in the heart of Eau Claire with a heart for the world.
