Grace Lutheran's reach extends far past the Chippewa Valley of western Wisconsin. Check out what you can do in a global way.

World Service

This group is extremely busy making quilts, bandages, baby layettes, sewing kits, and blankets, among other things. All items are given to those in need, organizations include Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Social Services, and World Hunger.

Bible Quotes & Quilting - Do you like to sew? Are you interested in sewing blankets for LWR? Would you like to donate fabric to LWR quilting project? Please join me the first Friday of each month at 7 p.m. to assemble, cut, sew, and quilt for Lutheran World Relief at my home, 3063 Uranus Avenue. Currently there is a wonderful group of women who meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 1 p.m. at church to sew quilts for LWR. Every year churches across the country send quilts to Lutheran World Relief for underprivileged countries. The plan is to have a short Bible reading and then get to work. Bring your sewing machines or rotary cutters & boards. The size requirement for quilt squares is 10 ½” x 10 ½”. Note this on your calendars and I hope to see you on Friday, January 4, 2008! Any questions, please call the church 832.8713.

Mission Minutes- Global Health

“It will never fit,” was my comment as I surveyed 7 pallets stacked as high as 8-9 feet with boxes of medical supplies and suitcases full of eyeglasses, plus 6 wheel chairs, 6 clinical scales and 7 complete computers; a total of 5 ton was to be packed into the 20 foot container before us. Its destination from Global Health Ministries in Fridley, Minnesota to Malawi, Africa would take 2 to 4 months.

Early morning November 10, 11 of us crawled sleepy-eyed (except for our driver, Pastor Irgens) into the Grace Lutheran van to make the 2 hour trip from Eau Claire to GHM. After arriving about 9 a.m. we signed in and grabbed a quick cup of coffee, then on to the task of moving the mountain of boxes into the container which was a scientific endeavor in itself. Each box was already bar coded with a description of the contents within. We formed an assembly line, picking up a box, scanning and counting it into the computer and like a jigsaw puzzle it was packed in the container. Pillow cases filled with small baby blankets were shoved between boxes to prevent shifting during its long journey first by truck to the railroad loading dock in St. Paul, then by train to the East coast where it would be loaded on a ship for its long journey to Tanzania, unloaded and place on a truck for the journey to Malawi. When the last box was placed in the container, we formed a circle and prayed for its safe journey. Yes, every last box fit into the container and my closing comment was “Ye of little faith.” After a potluck lunch, we boarded the van for our trip back to Eau Claire, tired and aching, but with a sense of God’s Spirit moving in each of us.
